Abstract
The present paper attempts to study the effective role of total shipping performance in overall growth of the overseas traffic performance
at major ports of India during the period 1999-2000 to 2008-09, against the backdrop of liberalisation and globalisation of
Indian economy, thus focusing on how far the growth of the total shipping performance is responsive to growth of overseas cargo
traffic performance at these ports, in compliance with the policy measures. So, this paper ends up with the scenario of both the
actual and expected performances, focusing on the strengthening of effective policy planning, drawing attention to the roles of
various policy practitioners in this respect.
