Abstract
This study concerns how professionalization and occupational closure in the architectural profession impact migrants’ career trajectories in the host country. The research design is qualitative, and 43 semi-structured interviews were conducted with Indian migrant architects living and working in the UK. This research contributes to the existing literature on architecture and migration by adopting professionalization and occupational closure theory to demonstrate how in a regulated profession, migrants may face challenges in getting professional jobs and transferring their professional qualifications in the host country. However, the migrants may navigate these challenges by re-qualifying as architects in the UK or working at levels below their qualifications within the architectural industry, compromising their elite professional identity.
