Abstract
The Covid-19 pandemic has adversely
affected every household
in India. The worst plight
has been of 139 million migrant
workers, whose daily livelihoods
have come under threat. It is essential
to understand the basic
reasons for migration of the labor
force. This paper studies ten
different factors, which influence
the propensity of this phenomenon.
It finds that demographic
factors like gender and
urbanization have a higher impact
than socioeconomic factors
like poverty (BPL), involvement
in farming and permanence of
job contract. Thus, this research
will aid policy makers in designing efficient social welfare schemes and decentralization of
economic opportunities.
