Abstract
This study investigates the trends in
GDP growth, employment growth and
corresponding employment elasticity in
South Asian countries during the last
two decades. It also investigated the
determinants of employment. The study
uses the data from the International
Labor Organization (ILO) and World
Development Indicators of World Bank.
The ‘point elasticity’ method has been
applied to estimate employment elasticity
trends, while a simple panel regression
is utilized to assess the determinants
of employment. The results indicate
that the GDP growth is not employment
elastic in most South Asian countries.
The study also shows that South
Asian economies are not following the
path of structural transformation experienced
by many developed countries.
